Hello dad. We visited you today. I really wasn’t ready but your grandson asked – he insisted – so we went. He loves you so much and he misses you. We all do – but your grandchildren REALLY miss you.

As I passed the thousands upon thousands of markers I couldn’t help but think of the unfathomable amount of families impacted by loss of a loved one that served our country. During our drive I took many photos and as I did I remembered something I read years ago –

“Only two defending forces have ever offered to die for you – Jesus Christ – and the American Soldier. One died for your soul, and the other died for your freedom.”

Today we celebrated our risen Savior.

He died so that we could live eternally.

He gave His life for our eternal freedom.

He is the victor!

Today, I’m thankful Jesus came to save a lost and dying world.

Today, I’m thankful He knew me before I was even formed in my momma’s belly.

Today, I’m thankful for the testimony of redemption He gave me to share.

Today, I’m also thankful for my dad. I’m thankful for my grandfather’s that both served our country. I am thankful God gave me the American heritage He did. I’m thankful for the men and women God has called to serve our country. And I’m thankful for the families that stand behind the servicemen and women. But for those that gave all – there simply are no words that will ever suffice. But because of your sacrifices, I was free to worship my Lord and Savior openly today. Because of your sacrifice I am free to hang a cross on my house. Because of your sacrifice I am free to share my faith with others openly and freely. Because of your sacrifice I have freedom to choose religion or no religion. Because of your sacrifice, I even have the freedom to be unpatriotic – obviously I’m not – but you get the point, I hope. I offer my thanks to you.

But – because of my Lord’s sacrifice, I. Am. Truly. Free.

John 8:32 – Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.
